How do you find SEO Keywords for your industry?
What are SEO Keywords?
SEO Keywords are the key terms, words, or phrases that people are typing into search engines, like Google, to find answers, products, support, etc.
By strategically placing these keywords throughout your website, you tell search engines what topics, support, or products you have content for. When search engines see the keywords, they populate your page(s) on the search results page so your audience can find you.
People who discover your content through these keywords are called organic traffic, and it helps build your reputation with search engines with the more organic traffic you have.
How do you find SEO Keywords for your industry?
The first step in your SEO journey should be researching your audience and competitors. You should then use this information to develop your SEO keywords.
Three steps I recommend to get started are:
1️⃣ Run an audit to see if you have current keywords. In this blog post, I provided a few tools you could use to run the audit.
2️⃣ Run an audit on competitors and see what keywords might benefit your website.
*BONUS TIP* Keeping a list of competitors you can add to and reference repeatedly is worthwhile.
3️⃣ If you need help filling out your SEO keyword list, the last resource I recommend is a Google search. Utilize your collected keywords and start typing each into the search engine. Then scroll down to the “People also ask” and “Related Searches” sections to find related questions or terms you might not have added.
*SIDE NOTE* The one thing I don’t necessarily like about this resource is you don’t know how these keywords or phrases rank just by looking at the search results. So, incorporating them into your content might be difficult to rank for. Typing these into the keyword tools that you used to run the audits can share more insight into their rankings.
What makes a good SEO Keyword?
Inside the keyword tools, there are three metrics you must look for to determine whether a keyword is worth adding to your list.
1️⃣ Search Volume — The higher this number, the more people are searching for this term, which is good. However, starting with a keyword with over 100 search volumes is worth adding to your list.
2️⃣ Search Difficulty — The lower the search difficulty, the easier it is to rank for (show up on search engines). The best keywords to add to your list are between 0 and 30.
3️⃣ Metrics Timestamp — SEO Keywords are constantly changing, so when creating or updating your list, look at the most recent metrics for the keywords you want to add.
You are trying to find a happy medium between these metrics. Here are a few examples of SEO keywords and their metrics.
If the search volume is 12,000 and the search difficulty is 60, look for similar keywords with lower search difficulty and smaller search volume.
If the search volume is only 50 and the search difficulty is 10, find a different keyword that people use more frequently and has a higher search volume.
